Thinking of Joining?
St Mary’s Lodge No 1763
A regular Freemasons' Lodge based in Thame, Oxfordshire.
Freemasonry means different things to each of those who join. For some, it’s about making new friends and acquaintances. For others it’s about being able to help deserving causes – making a contribution to family and society. But for most, it is an enjoyable hobby.
Becoming a Freemason
If you’re thinking of becoming a Freemason, The United Grand Lodge of England (which administers Lodges of Freemasons in England and Wales) has published an introductory booklet available here. Please also take a look at our FAQ’s which we hope you’ll find informative. “Masonry consists of a body of men brought together for the sake of mutual intellectual, social and moral improvement”
Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisation. It teaches self-knowledge through participation in a progression of ceremonies.
When you first apply or are introduced by someone you know to be a Mason you will be asked to complete an application form. This application form will be considered by a panel made up of Senior members of the Lodge. You will then be asked to attend an interview panel where you will be able to ask questions to which you may not have found answers. It is a friendly panel and not one to be concerned about. Do not forget that each one on the panel has gone through the same procedure which you will be experiencing at this meeting. Subsequently you will be advised of the panel's decision and hopefully with a mutually convenient date for your entry into Freemasonry. Again not something to worry about, everyone present at your first meeting will have gone through the exact same process as you.
